What is NBA Connections?

NBA Connections usually means sorting 16 basketball players into four hidden groups. Several publishers use that name, so the first step is to identify which board you are playing. The same player can appear in different puzzles with different connections.

This guide compares HoopGrids, Airball, and AllStar Grid. The worked answer example belongs specifically to AllStar Grid's October 16, 2026 puzzle #8. It should not be used as an answer key for another site.

Count what is on screen. Sixteen supplied names suggest a grouping puzzle; nine empty squares with edge labels suggest a trivia grid. Hoopgoat's Connect uses a third format: building a five-player path.

AllStar Grid

Which game are you playing?

HoopGrids NBA Connections

4×4 grouping with hints

HoopGrids presents this as a daily game. Its help describes four sets of four players and two hint levels. Use this destination when your board says 'by HoopGrids.com'.

Airball NBA Connections

Daily 4×4 grouping; five lives

Airball has its own daily player groups and rules. Green is the easiest tier here. Its answers are separate from HoopGrids and AllStar Grid.

AllStar Grid NBA Connections

Daily 4×4 grouping and dated archive

This is the publisher used for our worked answer example. Its archive provides a date, puzzle number, four groups, and supporting player facts.

AllStar Grid NBA Connections Unlimited

Fresh 4×4 puzzle each round

The publisher provides a separate unlimited destination for additional rounds. A random round is not the same board as its dated daily puzzle.

Hoopgoat Connect

Different format: five-player path

Choose one player from each row while staying within one column of your previous pick. The result compares your lineup with community choices; it does not reveal four hidden categories.

How to play

  1. In the four-group format, choose four supplied players who share a precise connection, then submit. A correct group reveals its category and leaves fewer players to organize.
  2. AllStar Grid allows four mistakes. Airball's rules specify five lives. Use the counter and help panel on your chosen site instead of assuming that every version has the same allowance.
  3. AllStar Grid orders difficulty yellow, green, blue, purple. Airball puts green first, then yellow, blue, and purple. Color alone does not identify the same difficulty across both sites.
  4. HoopGrids describes two hint levels: the smaller hint reveals two members of the next easiest group, while the larger hint reveals that group's category.
  5. Before opening an answer key, match its publisher, puzzle date, and player list. A correct answer for a different board will not help solve yours.

Answers and how to check them

This example is AllStar Grid NBA Connections #8, dated October 16, 2026. It was the latest dated answer page visible in the publisher's archive during our October 18 review. The groups and supporting seasons below come from that page. No October 18 answer set for AllStar Grid, HoopGrids, or Airball was verified.

Yellow — Boston Celtics players

Jermaine O'Neal · Tom Heinsohn · Kevin Garnett · Tristan Thompson

These are Celtics careers from different eras: Jermaine O'Neal played there in 2010–11 and 2011–12; Tom Heinsohn from 1956–57 through 1964–65; Kevin Garnett from 2007–08 through 2012–13; and Tristan Thompson in 2020–21. They need not have shared a roster.

Green — Utah Jazz players

Bernard King · Paul Millsap · Adrian Dantley · Richard Jefferson

The common franchise is Utah: Bernard King in 1979–80, Paul Millsap from 2006–07 through 2012–13, Adrian Dantley from 1979–80 through 1985–86, and Richard Jefferson in 2013–14. A short stint counts for this category as well as a long one.

Blue — Players listed as guards

Allen Iverson · Brandon Roy · Jeremy Lin · Calvin Murphy

The publisher lists Allen Iverson as SG/PG, Brandon Roy as SG, Jeremy Lin as PG/SG, and Calvin Murphy as PG. The shared category is the broader guard position, not one identical position abbreviation.

Purple — NBA debuts in the 1980s

Anthony Mason · Ralph Sampson · Dennis Rodman · David Robinson

The first NBA seasons listed are 1989–90 for Anthony Mason, 1983–84 for Ralph Sampson, 1986–87 for Dennis Rodman, and 1989–90 for David Robinson. Each season begins in the 1980s. This is a debut category, not a draft-year category.

How to use hints without spoiling the whole board

Decide which part of the puzzle you want help with. A category hint tells you what relationship to test; revealing two members tells you where to begin looking. These answer different questions, so use the smallest clue that addresses your difficulty.

With a possible group, write down the exact fact that joins all four names. A shared franchise does not require the players to have been teammates. A shared draft year is different from a shared first NBA season. The worked example on this page shows both distinctions.

Daily, archive, and infinite play

A daily board is identified by a date or issue number. An archive lets you return to one of those boards. Unlimited play generates additional rounds, so an answer guide for a particular day cannot serve as its universal solution.

AllStar Grid publishes separate daily and unlimited pages, linked above. We have not verified an infinite mode for HoopGrids or Airball Connections. Choose a destination that actually offers the mode you want rather than treating 'infinite' as part of every game's name.

Why Hoopgoat Connect needs a different kind of answer

Hoopgoat's currently linked Connect game asks for a connected starting five. You pick one player in each row, and the next pick must remain within one column of the one above it. Its help specifies five boards a day.

After locking the path, you compare player pick rates and lineups with other users. That is a choice-and-comparison challenge, so a four-category Connections answer key is the wrong kind of help. Plan a legal path through all five rows before committing your favorite early pick.

A better way to approach the board

  • Start by writing a precise rule in your head. 'These four played for the same team' can be tested; 'these four are famous' cannot narrow the board reliably.
  • Give the fourth player the most scrutiny. It is easy to remember three well-known teammates and insert a fourth player because his name looks familiar. Check that the same fact supports every tile.
  • Before submitting a group, scan the remaining players. If your choice leaves another apparent connection with only three members, one of your selections may belong there instead.
  • Keep draft year separate from first NBA season. College, overseas play, injury, or other circumstances can make those dates differ. A label about a debut is asking a different question from a label about the draft.
  • If you receive 'one away,' reconsider which player has the weakest evidence. Repeating near-identical guesses without a specific reason quickly spends the remaining attempts.

How it differs from NYT Connections

  • NYT Connections can depend on spelling or alternate meanings. The basketball grouping games discussed here primarily ask you to recognize facts about players.
  • Publisher-specific rules matter: Airball's five lives and green-first difficulty sequence differ from AllStar Grid's four mistakes and yellow-first sequence.
  • Connections asks you to partition a supplied list. A 3×3 basketball grid asks you to enter players at intersections, and Hoopgoat Connect asks you to choose a path through rows.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I play NBA Connections?

HoopGrids, Airball, and AllStar Grid publish separate basketball grouping games. Choose the publisher that matches your board. The answer example here belongs to AllStar Grid, dated October 16, 2026.

Can I play NBA Connections infinite or unlimited?

AllStar Grid has a dedicated NBA Connections Unlimited page with a new puzzle each round. We have not verified an infinite mode for HoopGrids or Airball Connections.

How do hints work in HoopGrids NBA Connections?

HoopGrids describes a smaller hint that reveals two players in the next easiest group and a larger hint that reveals the group's category.

Is Airball NBA Connections the same puzzle?

No. Airball publishes its own daily board. Its rules specify five lives and a green, yellow, blue, purple difficulty sequence, so do not transfer another publisher's answers or color assumptions.

Is Hoopgoat Connect a four-group Connections game?

The currently linked Hoopgoat Connect game uses a different format: select a five-player path through rows and compare the lineup with community choices. It is not the 16-player grouping game.

Are these today's NBA Connections answers?
